Kentish Sail Association
The Kentish Sail Association was established in 1973 to promote and run an annual Swale smack and sailing barge match. Since then it has organised thirty-seven regattas that take place each year in August in the East Swale. These days it attracts some seventy-plus traditional craft of all sizes as well as a large armada of spectators; the races are a magnificent sight. In addition, the Association aims to promote the skills needed to handle and preserve these craft, and assists young people to experience days afloat.
A newsletter, On the Mud, is published twice a year and a number of social events are organised for members. The Association welcomes new members (annual fee £10) who are interested in the traditional boat scene, whether or not they own their own craft, and it can help to introduce them to a network of like-minded individuals and organisations involved in this sphere of maritime activity. This year’s match will be held on 7 August.
