London Array rock dump at Kentish Flats ( Posted 25.01.12 )

IMPORTANT information following a meeting at London Array with regard to the rock dumps at the Kentish Flats and Britned cable crossings. The main concern is the reduction of the depth of water at the Kentish Flats rock dump which is now  reduced to 1.5m in places. London Array have informed the Coastguard, the Hydrographical office and Trinity House and are awaiting their responses but were keen that as many local craft, leisure and commercial, are as aware as possible. Please click for the NTM giving the details.

MYA position on Thames Estuary Airport proposals ( Posted 20.01.12 )

The MYA is currently monitoring the situation. Before committing to any involvement, we need to know more about the proposals and how they may impact on leisure users of the Medway and Swale. We also need to be aware of any economic and environmental benefits, and detriments, that such a scheme would have on our area before we decide what view to take. Whatever the outcome, the MYA will ensure that the impact on leisure users of the Thames, Medway and Swale is minimised and our needs are taken into account at the earliest stage in any potential development.

Marine Police Unit Newsletter ( Posted 23.12.11 )

Just to inform you that there is another marine newsletter on our web site. To reach this please click on the below link: www.kent.police.uk/marine

It is actually listed as Sept 2011, but that is a mistake as it should read Dec 2011 – sorry for the confusion! If you have problems accessing the site please let me know.

There has been much going on within the unit of late, staff changes and unit  training, which has precluded me sending out regular newsletters. I hope as things settle down next year that I can produce the newsletters on a more frequent basis. I hope to be able to keep you all informed with what is going on with the Olympic preparation and any implications for Medway and Thames users.

If there is anything you would like included within these newsletters please feel free to contact me to discuss, anything marine related can be included.

It only remains for me to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year!

Marine Licensing Workshops ( Posted 05.12.11 )

Following last week’s workshops on Marine Licensing we have produced a questionnaire on past dredging activity, the contents of which will be used to inform the Medway and Swale Maintenance Dredge Protocol and Water Framework Directive compliance assessments.

If you have carried out maintenance dredging within the last 10 years I would be grateful if you would complete the attached questionnaire and return it to the address below before Christmas. This will allow the necessary time to complete the assessments by April 2012, when the MMO begin licensing maintenance dredging operations. The form may seem long winded, but makes allowance for those who dredge in more than one location. (If you dredge in more than 5 locations please include the additional locations). It is clearly important for us to gain as much accurate and honest information in order that your present dredging activities may continue in the future. Please take time to fill in the form with as much information and as accurately as you can. If you are aware of anyone who carries out dredging, but was not at the workshops and may not have received this information, please let me know, or pass on the information to them. Please click to download: Presentation slides, Notes of the meetings, Questionnaire.

If you have any questions regarding the information or questionnaire, please let me know.

Kingsferry Boat Club Theft and Damage Update ( Posted 28.11.11 )

On Wednesday 23 November, between 7 to 7.30 PM a Marine Police Patrol was checking the Kingsferry Bridge area when they spotted an individual with a torch in the KBC compound. The spooked individual made off under the old road bridge and into farmland while officers moored up to give chase. A police dog was called but a thorough search did not locate the individual on this occasion. Police patrols will continue in this area at odd times. While we would obviously have prefered to have captured this individual. it is likley our presence detered him/her from their intended mischief. This person may target other facilities so please keep a look out and alert the police if you see suspicious individuals by calling 01622 690690. If you believe a crime is being committed please call 999. Thank you to all those MYA members who have contacted me to affirm their support for the Marine Unit and our team of Marine Special Constables. Thank you.

Kingsferry Boat Club – Thefts and Damage ( Posted 15.11.11 )

Sir,
I was surprised to read comments about the ‘Marine Police’ on your website, published before I was afforded the opportunity to address them. I would be obliged if you would please accommodate my reply.
John Dewey’s email of 14th November concerning the thefts and damage at Kingsferry Boat Club, while sent with the best of intentions to warn others, is a little inaccurate. I should like to correct the misunderstanding and reassure your membership of the significant work we have been involved in to investigate this crime.
First, the ‘Marine Police’ were not ‘on holiday’ but working at Sheerness. Some of us are long overdue a holiday but not on that day!!
The very nature of our work means we cover the coastline from Dungeness to Harwich and all the rivers in between, so the fastest way to get help to the victims at Kingsferry Boat Club is by telephoning the central switchboard on 01622 690690 and the nearest land-based officer will be despatched. This is much faster than recalling a marine patrol deployed many miles away or leaving a message on an off-duty Marine Officer’s ‘phone. PC Randall from Sittingbourne was despatched to KBC and began the initial enquiries.
Over the following weekend I deployed the Marine Special Constable’s Team to the scene and they conducted numerous enquiries, searched the shoreline and located stolen property and other evidence. PCs Dadd, Lavender and PSE Wood also attended over the weekend from the Police RHIB to check areas inaccessible from the land and to reassure the members. Over the Summer months the Marine Specials were deployed every weekend to Kingsferry to help tackle nuisance problems and the contacts they established then have helped with their current enquiries. I was able to catch up with John today and give him this update.
The investigation continues and I would encourage boat owners to remain vigilant and report sightings of suspicious people at your yards and marinas. The MYA website includes free information sheets you can download, that tell you how you can protect your boat, maximise the chances of helping us capture thieves and the best way to contact us. Thank you.
Kind regards
Steve Seabrook

Kingsferry Boat Club Theft and Damage ( Posted 14.11.11 )

I regret to inform you that there has been an incident of theft and damage to boats at Kinsferry bridge. It occurred during the hours of darkness between Wed. 9th and Thursday 10th November; at least two motor boats were boarded and engines started, but as the culprits were not marine minded and seacocks not opened, the boats could not be taken away. When the problem was discovered on the following morning, a member phoned the marine police, but was told they were all on holiday!? He then contacted local police, who are treating it as an incident (with crime no. etc); we have contacted members involved, to compile a list of damage and thefts, which may include dinghies. I will inform you of developments, but you may wish to circulate a warning to other MYA clubs.
Yours Sincerely,
John Dewey (Hon.Sec. KBC)

Statement on Lord Foster’s Thames Estuary Airport Announcement ( Posted 03.11.11 )

Following Lord Foster’s announcement today (set for release at 6.00 am on 2 November 2011) on his proposals to build an airport on the Isle of Grain, Medway Council has today stated that this is one of the worst places for anyone to build a new airport.

Not only is it on the wrong side of London, with the capital in the way for most UK air travelers, but also plans released by the architect appear to place it on top of Europe’s largest Liquefied Natural Gas containers, where 20 per cent of Britain’s gas supplies are delivered by super tanker annually.

In addition, the site would also be where a major UK power station is based.

Leader of Medway Council, in Kent, Cllr Rodney Chambers, said: “The plan to build an airport on the Isle of Grain is, quite possibly, the daftest in a long list of pie in the sky schemes that have been put forward for an airport.

“The Isle of Grain is home to one of the world’s largest Liquefied Natural Gas terminals, with a fifth of the UK’s gas supply offloaded by container ships and stored there. It is plainly obvious that aircraft and huge gas containers are a potentially lethal mix.

“In addition to this, the sunken American warship the SS Richard Montgomery is submerged just a few miles from the location and laden with high explosives, the London Array wind farm is being built nearby and the airport cuts through an area that is home to hundreds of thousands of migrating birds.

“We have looked at Lord Foster’s plan and he appears to want to place his fantasy Isle of Grain airport on top of the LNG plant and a power station. It beggars belief.

“I can only assume he has not actually left his offices and traveled from London to Medway to have a look before releasing this.”

Cllr Chambers added: “A huge new airport on or near the Thames Estuary is both unaffordable and unnecessary and the government and many airline industry giants have already said they do not support such a plan.

“In addition, a poll by ICM for Medway Council recently showed that 76 per cent of people across the country, and even 67 per cent of Londoners, are against a Thames estuary airport.

“An airport on or near the Thames Estuary is unnecessary and unaffordable and would cause a devastating impact to the hundreds of thousands of migrating birds there as well as the local environment.”

“Instead, we should look to using up capacity at existing airports, which is already government policy.

“For instance, Manston, in Kent, already has one of the longest runways in Europe and is close to the high speed rail link to London while Birmingham is near the proposed site for a second high speed train and says it aims to double capacity.”

IRC questionnaire from RORC ( Posted 25.10.11 )

At the recent  GBR IRC meeting the subject of encouraging people into IRC was discussed. Their immediate conclusion is that before taking action they need to try and find out more about why more owners do not take up IRC.

It is no secret that the Rating Office fully supports PY and local handicap systems to encourage people into the sport; however they are interested in why more people do not then progress into IRC. The information in these questionnaires is intended for their information; it is NOT intended to bombard people with a ‘hard sell’, but if you include your name and contact they may wish to answer any specific comments or address false perceptions.

They have therefore put together two brief questionnaires on their website, one aimed at owners and the second at clubs. Direct links to the questionnaires are:
Owners: http://www.rorcrating.com/not-using-irc-tell-us-why.html
Clubs: http://www.rorcrating.com/clubs-questionnaire.html

We would appreciate your help in completing the relevant questionnaire, thank you.  It would also be really helpful if clubs could forward the Owners’ questionnaire link to members, or post it on their websites?

Balanced Seas Regional Stakeholder Group submit Final Recommendations for MCZs ( Posted 09.09.11 )

Stakeholder Group submitted their Final Recommendations for Marine Conservation Zones in the south-east to Natural England and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee.

The Balanced Seas Final Report gives recommendations for 30 Marine Conservation Zones. The report is the result of two years tremendous hard work of the Balanced Seas Regional Stakeholder Group, supported by the three advisory Local Groups. The report, and descriptions of each of the Marine Conservation Zones, can be found here: www.balancedseas.org/page /RSGResources.html <http://www.balancedseas.org/page/RSG%20Resources.html>

The Balanced Seas project was a two-year stakeholder-led collaborative project set up to work with representatives of  key interest groups to recommend Marine Conservation Zones around south-east England.  The project is now winding down and the recommendations will be reviewed by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (for offshore waters) and Natural England (for English territorial waters out to 12 nautical miles) who will advise on the scientific evidence underpinning the recommended sites. The independent Science Advisory Panel will also provide its scientific assessment on the extent to which the resulting network of Marine Conservation Zones and existing Marine Protected Areas is likely to achieve the goal of ecological coherence. Separately, throughout the coming months, the Balanced Seas project will produce detailed assessments on the social, economic and
environmental impacts of the recommendations.

In 2012, all final recommendations and advice from the Science Advisory Panel, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and Natural England will be put forward to the Government which, following a public consultation, will determine which sites are finally designated as Marine Conservation Zones. The public consultation will be an important opportunity for stakeholders to share their views and have a further say.

The results of the public consultation will help determine which sites are finally designated as Marine Conservation Zones. Decisions about how the sites are managed, and what activities can or cannot take place in Marine Conservation Zones, will be finalised once designation is confirmed.

Balanced Seas will be sending out a final newsletter at the end of September. After September, if you wish to continue to be informed
about the Marine Conservation Zone process, please sign up to receive the national newsletter at http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/page-2409.You can also email mczproject@jncc.gov.uk<mailto:mczproject@jncc.gov.uk> or visit the websites of Defra, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and Natural England. Trot Boat Destroyed by fire. Arson suspected ( Posted 08.10.10 )

On the night of 06/10/10 the QYC trot boat was set on fire, the damage is so severe that the boat has sunk and the hammerhead scorched. This took place at approximately 0200hrs and was reported by staff at Sheerness docks that could see the fire from there. This is yet another example that supports the view by some club members that the ATL should be decommissioned.

This is the second fire that has been started on a boat on the ATL. Veritas was also targeted last winter when unidentified intruders broke into the boat and set fire to it. After which they untied the boat and set it adrift. Fortunately the fire was set on fire resistant material and went out, and by then they could not board the boat as they had let it go. My own personal view varies considerably, from total disgust in the people who did this, and a desire to remove the ATL as a type of punishment, to a realisation that the real people who would suffer are the majority of people who use the ATL responsibly.

We would welcome as many volunteers as possible this weekend to remove the wreck as it could potentially be a hazard, and would without doubt break free of the ATL shortly. Anyone who is available to assist should meet up at the club on Saturday by 0900 hrs.
